Did you ever have a question and think to yourself, "I bet someone somewhere in the world knows the answer, but I'll probably never run into them or even know who they might be?" Now with the information superhighway, you can not only search websites for information, but also communicate with people you probably will never meet, getting answers to obscure questions that only they might know. Internet communication resources known as newsgroups have been around almost since the dawn of the Internet, enabling scientists to post questions (and answers) to other scientists who were interested in the same subject. Today, newsgroups are like virtual coffee houses where people get together to talk about their mutual interests, except with newsgroups the communication is written, not verbal. Newsgroups revolve around specific subjects, such as the Dallas Cowboys or organic gardening. You can read what others have written and then post your own comments. There are literally thousands of newsgroups covering virtually every topic imaginable -- from computers, social issues, literature and science, to recreation, entertainment, hobbies and current affairs. In newsgroups you can find job postings, business and healthcare advice, announcements about events, referrals, political and religious discussions -- even photos you can download. If you have any other questions about newsgroups write to gail@paperhanging.com she will be happy to help you find what you need. |
